Agentic AI

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)
A hypothetical AI system with human-level reasoning ability across all cognitive domains. AGI would be able to learn any intellectual task that a human can, without task-specific training.
AGI does not exist today. Current AI systems, including the most advanced LLMs, are narrow AI — excellent at specific tasks but unable to generalize across domains the way humans do. Business planning should focus on narrow AI capabilities.

Bias (in AI)
Systematic errors in AI outputs that reflect prejudices in training data, algorithm design, or deployment context. AI bias can manifest as unfair treatment of demographic groups, geographic regions, or use cases underrepresented in training data.
AI bias is a legal and reputational risk. HR teams using AI for resume screening, banks using AI for credit decisions, and marketers using AI for audience targeting must audit their systems for bias regularly.

Chain-of-Thought Prompting
A technique where you instruct an AI to show its reasoning step-by-step before providing a final answer. This improves accuracy on complex tasks by forcing the model to work through the problem systematically.
Adding 'think step by step' or 'show your reasoning' to prompts can improve accuracy by 20–40% on analytical tasks like financial analysis, strategic planning, and data interpretation.
Chatbot
A software application that simulates human conversation through text or voice. Modern chatbots powered by LLMs can handle open-ended conversations, while rule-based chatbots follow predefined scripts.

Computer Vision

Embedding
A numerical representation of text, images, or other data in a high-dimensional vector space. Embeddings capture semantic meaning, allowing AI to understand that 'automobile' and 'car' are related concepts.
Embeddings power semantic search, recommendation systems, and RAG pipelines. If your company has a knowledge base, embeddings are how AI understands and retrieves relevant information from it.

Few-Shot Learning
A technique where an AI model learns to perform a task from just a few examples provided in the prompt, rather than requiring extensive training data. Contrasts with zero-shot (no examples) and many-shot (many examples) approaches.
Few-shot prompting is the fastest way to customize AI output for your business. Providing 2–3 examples of your preferred writing style, report format, or analysis structure dramatically improves output quality.
Fine-Tuning
The process of further training a pre-trained AI model on a specific dataset to improve its performance on a particular task or domain. Fine-tuning adapts a general model to specialized use cases.
Fine-tuning is how enterprises customize AI for their specific needs — training on internal documents, company terminology, and domain-specific knowledge. It is more expensive than prompting but produces more consistent results.
Foundation Model
A large AI model trained on broad data that can be adapted to many downstream tasks. Examples include GPT-4, Claude, Llama, and Gemini. Foundation models are the base layer that powers most modern AI applications.
Understanding foundation models helps business leaders make build-vs-buy decisions. You rarely need to build a foundation model — you need to choose the right one and customize it for your use case.

Generative AI
AI systems that create new content — text, images, code, audio, or video — based on patterns learned from training data. Generative AI produces novel outputs rather than simply classifying or analyzing existing data.
Generative AI is the category that includes ChatGPT, Midjourney, and GitHub Copilot. It is the most immediately useful AI category for most business professionals because it augments creative and analytical work.
Guardrails
Constraints and safety mechanisms built into AI systems to prevent harmful, inappropriate, or off-topic outputs. Guardrails can be technical (content filters, output validators) or procedural (human review checkpoints).
Every enterprise AI deployment needs guardrails. Without them, AI systems can generate inaccurate information, reveal confidential data, or produce content that violates brand guidelines.
H
Hallucination
When an AI model generates information that sounds plausible but is factually incorrect, fabricated, or unsupported by its training data. Hallucinations are a fundamental limitation of current LLMs.
Hallucination is the primary risk in using AI for research, reporting, and customer communication. Always verify AI-generated facts, statistics, and citations. Build verification steps into your AI workflows.
Human-in-the-Loop (HITL)
An AI system design pattern where human judgment is integrated into the decision-making process. Humans review, approve, or modify AI outputs before they take effect.

Inference
The process of running a trained AI model to generate predictions or outputs from new input data. Inference is what happens when you send a prompt to ChatGPT — the model 'infers' a response.
Inference costs are the primary ongoing expense of AI deployment. Understanding inference pricing helps you budget for AI tools and choose between cloud APIs and self-hosted models.

Knowledge Graph
A structured representation of real-world entities and the relationships between them. Knowledge graphs help AI systems understand context and connections that flat databases cannot capture.
Companies use knowledge graphs to power intelligent search, recommendation engines, and customer 360 views. They are particularly valuable for organizations with complex product catalogs or regulatory requirements.

Large Language Model (LLM)
An AI model trained on massive text datasets that can understand and generate human language. LLMs power chatbots, writing assistants, code generators, and many other AI applications. Examples include GPT-4, Claude, Llama, and Gemini.
LLMs are the technology behind most AI tools business professionals use today. Understanding their capabilities and limitations is essential for effective AI adoption.
M
Machine Learning (ML)
A subset of AI where systems learn patterns from data and improve their performance over time without being explicitly programmed for each task. ML encompasses supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning.
Machine learning powers recommendation engines, fraud detection, demand forecasting, and predictive maintenance. If your business has historical data, ML can likely extract actionable patterns from it.
Model Context Protocol (MCP)
An open standard developed by Anthropic that enables AI models to securely connect to external data sources and tools. MCP provides a universal interface for AI to access databases, APIs, and file systems.
MCP is becoming the standard for enterprise AI integration. It allows AI assistants to access your company's data without custom API development, reducing integration time from weeks to hours.
Multimodal AI
AI systems that can process and generate multiple types of data — text, images, audio, and video — within a single model. Multimodal models understand the relationships between different data types.
Multimodal AI enables use cases like analyzing a chart image and explaining its trends in text, or generating a presentation from a written brief. It is the direction all major AI platforms are heading.

Natural Language Processing (NLP)
The branch of AI focused on enabling machines to understand, interpret, and generate human language. NLP powers translation, sentiment analysis, text summarization, and conversational AI.
NLP is embedded in tools you already use — email filters, search engines, customer feedback analysis, and document processing. Understanding NLP helps you identify automation opportunities in text-heavy workflows.
O
Open Source AI
AI models and tools whose source code and model weights are publicly available for anyone to use, modify, and distribute. Open source AI includes models like Llama, Mistral, and Stable Diffusion.
Open source AI gives organizations more control over their AI stack — no vendor lock-in, full data privacy, and the ability to customize models for specific needs. The tradeoff is higher technical requirements for deployment.

Prompt Engineering
The practice of crafting effective instructions (prompts) to get optimal outputs from AI models. Good prompt engineering includes clear instructions, relevant context, output format specifications, and examples.

R
RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
A technique that combines AI text generation with real-time information retrieval from external knowledge bases. RAG reduces hallucination by grounding AI responses in verified, up-to-date source material.
RAG is how enterprises build AI systems that answer questions about their own data — internal documents, product databases, customer records — without fine-tuning a model. It is the most cost-effective way to create a company-specific AI assistant.
Responsible AI
An approach to AI development and deployment that prioritizes fairness, transparency, accountability, privacy, and safety. Responsible AI is not a single technology but a set of practices applied throughout the AI lifecycle.
Responsible AI is increasingly a regulatory requirement (EU AI Act, NIST AI RMF) and a competitive advantage. Companies known for responsible AI practices build stronger customer trust and attract better talent.

Sentiment Analysis
AI technology that identifies and categorizes the emotional tone of text — positive, negative, neutral, or more nuanced emotions like frustration, excitement, or confusion.
Marketing teams use sentiment analysis to monitor brand perception, customer service teams use it to prioritize urgent tickets, and product teams use it to analyze feature feedback at scale.
T
Temperature (in AI)
A parameter that controls the randomness of AI model outputs. Low temperature (0.0–0.3) produces more deterministic, focused responses. High temperature (0.7–1.0) produces more creative, varied responses.
Use low temperature for factual tasks (data analysis, report writing, code generation) and higher temperature for creative tasks (brainstorming, marketing copy, ideation). Most business tasks benefit from temperature 0.2–0.5.
Token
The basic unit of text that AI models process. A token is roughly 3/4 of a word in English. Models have context windows measured in tokens — the maximum amount of text they can process in a single interaction.
Understanding tokens helps you estimate AI costs (most APIs charge per token) and work within model limits. A 128K token context window can process roughly 96,000 words — about the length of a novel.
Transfer Learning
A technique where knowledge gained from training on one task is applied to a different but related task. Transfer learning is why foundation models can be adapted to specialized domains without training from scratch.
Transfer learning is the economic engine of modern AI. Instead of building custom models from scratch (millions of dollars), companies can adapt existing models to their needs (thousands of dollars).
V
Vector Database
A specialized database designed to store and search high-dimensional vector embeddings efficiently. Vector databases power semantic search, recommendation systems, and RAG pipelines.
If you are building any AI application that needs to search through your company's documents, products, or knowledge base, you will likely need a vector database. Popular options include Pinecone, Weaviate, and Chroma.
Z
Zero-Shot Learning
An AI model's ability to perform a task it was not explicitly trained on, using only the instructions in the prompt with no examples. Modern LLMs have strong zero-shot capabilities for many common tasks.
Zero-shot capability is what makes modern AI tools immediately useful — you can ask them to write a marketing email, analyze a spreadsheet, or summarize a document without any setup or training.
