The AIE Angle

Why NotebookLM made the cut

NotebookLM has changed enough in the last few months that anyone who tried it a year ago should look again. The biggest shift: it is now part of the Gemini app. Google rolled out 'Notebooks' inside Gemini that sync directly with NotebookLM — anything you add in one place automatically appears in the other, so you can do research in Gemini and use NotebookLM-only outputs (Video Overviews, Infographics) on the same source set. The Studio panel is now a proper workbench — Audio Overviews, narrated Video Overviews, Infographics, Mind Maps, Slide Decks, and Reports are first-class outputs you can spin up in parallel from the same source set. Recent additions include Cinematic Video Overviews (built on Veo and Imagen for fluid animation rather than static slides), ten predefined Infographic styles with orientation and language controls, Slide Revisions for line-by-line feedback on generated decks, and Interactive Mode for Audio Overviews where you can interrupt the AI hosts mid-podcast and ask follow-up questions. The whole thing is still source-grounded, which is the actual point: it only answers from what you uploaded. For research-heavy work — competitive landscapes, regulatory reading, internal knowledge synthesis — this is now the most useful free tool Google ships.

Convert dense industry reports (Gartner, Forrester) into Cinematic Video Overviews or one-page Infographics with verifiable citations.

  5. 5

Prep for sales calls by loading prospect 10-Ks, earnings calls, and press releases into one notebook and querying across them.

Common Questions

NotebookLM FAQ

The questions business professionals most often ask about NotebookLM.

What types of sources can NotebookLM process?+

PDFs, Google Docs, Slides, text files, web URLs, YouTube videos, and audio uploads. You can mix source types in a single notebook and ask questions that span all of them. NotebookLM only answers from your sources, which keeps responses grounded and citable.

What's new in NotebookLM in the last few months?+

NotebookLM is now integrated into the Gemini app via 'Notebooks,' a project-management surface that syncs directly with NotebookLM — sources added in either place show up in both. The Studio panel added Cinematic Video Overviews (built on Veo and Imagen for fluid animation), ten predefined Infographic styles with orientation and language controls, Slide Decks with Slide Revisions, and an Interactive Mode for Audio Overviews that lets you interrupt the AI hosts and ask follow-up questions grounded in your sources.

Is NotebookLM the same thing as the Gemini app now?+

They are integrated but not identical. Notebooks inside the Gemini app sync with NotebookLM, so a single source set is available in both places. NotebookLM still has unique outputs like Video Overviews and Infographics. Use Gemini for general AI work and project organization; jump into NotebookLM when you need its multi-modal output formats.

Is NotebookLM free?+

Yes, NotebookLM is free with generous usage limits. Google Workspace and Gemini Advanced subscribers get higher limits and additional features. There is also a mobile app for iOS and Android.

How is NotebookLM different from ChatGPT?+

NotebookLM is purpose-built for grounded analysis of your sources — it will only answer from what you upload, with citations back to the source. ChatGPT is a general assistant that can browse the web. For research where source attribution matters, NotebookLM wins. For open-ended ideation, ChatGPT is the better fit.
