Evaluating

Groq

GroqCloud runs popular open-weight models on Groq's own inference chips (LPUs), and speed is the whole pitch. Rent Llama, Qwen, and other open models by the token through an OpenAI-compatible API instead of buying hardware to run them yourself.

The AIE Angle

Why Groq made the cut

Groq built its own chip for one job, running a model that's already trained, and GroqCloud is where you rent it. The draw is speed. Responses come back fast enough that an agent calling a model several times in a row stops feeling sluggish. The models are open-weight ones, the same families you could download and run on your own machine, so GroqCloud is a good place to find out whether a model is good enough before you buy a box to host it. The API is OpenAI-compatible, so existing code mostly needs a new base URL and key. You can also reach Groq through OpenRouter as one of its providers if you'd rather keep a single account. One piece of context: in December 2025 Nvidia signed a non-exclusive licensing deal for Groq's inference technology and hired several of its leaders. Groq stayed independent and kept GroqCloud running. It's worth watching, but it doesn't change how you'd use it today.

5 Ways To Use It

Groq for business

  1. 1

Try an open-weight model on your real work before spending money on local hardware to run it.

  2. 2

Speed up agents that call a model many times in a row, where waiting on each response adds up.

  3. 3

Swap GroqCloud in for an OpenAI endpoint by changing the base URL and API key.

  4. 4

Reach Groq-hosted models through OpenRouter to keep one account and one bill.

Common Questions

Groq FAQ

The questions business professionals most often ask about Groq.

What is Groq?+

Groq is an AI inference company that designed its own chip, the LPU, to run trained models quickly. GroqCloud is its hosted service, where you call open-weight models through an API and pay per use.

What models can I run on GroqCloud?+

Open-weight models such as Llama, Qwen, and others. The lineup changes as new models ship, so check Groq's model list before building a workflow on a specific one.

Is the GroqCloud API compatible with OpenAI's?+

Yes. The API is OpenAI-compatible, so most existing code only needs a new base URL and API key.

What did the Nvidia deal change?+

In December 2025 Nvidia signed a non-exclusive license for Groq's inference technology, and several Groq leaders joined Nvidia. Groq continues to operate independently and GroqCloud kept running.
