Evaluating

Ollama

Ollama is a free app for downloading and running open models on your own computer. Pick a model from its library, chat with it in the desktop app, or call it from your own code, and nothing you type leaves your machine.

The AIE Angle

Why Ollama made the cut

Ollama is the shortest path from "I wonder if my laptop can run AI" to a working private model. Install the desktop app for Mac or Windows, pick a model from the library and start chatting. You can drag a PDF straight into the conversation. The library lists most open model families in several sizes, and the size you pick is what decides whether it runs well on your hardware: at 4-bit compression, budget roughly 0.6GB of memory per billion parameters plus a few gigabytes of headroom. Ollama also runs a local API, so scripts, agents and other apps can use the same models. Start with a small model on one real task before you reach for a big one. For more room, compare it with LM Studio, or pool several machines with Mesh LLM.

Common Questions

Ollama FAQ

The questions business professionals most often ask about Ollama.

What is Ollama?+

Ollama is a free app that downloads open AI models and runs them on your own computer, with a chat window and a local API.

Does Ollama send my data to the cloud?+

Models you download run on your machine, so prompts and files you give a local model stay on your computer.

What hardware do I need to run Ollama?+

Memory matters most. A 4-bit model needs roughly 0.6GB per billion parameters plus headroom, so a 4B model fits in about 2.5GB and an 8B model in about 5GB. Older Intel Macs need macOS 14 or later.

Ollama or LM Studio?+

Both are free and run the same open models. Ollama is lighter and has a simple API; LM Studio adds a fuller model browser. Try whichever installs cleanly on your machine.
